Dr. Sigmund Freud, originally named Sigismund Freud, was a pioneering neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, renowned for revolutionizing our understanding of human personality. Born in 1856, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and, after graduating, worked at the Vienna General Hospital. Freud's innovative approach began with his collaboration with Josef Breuer on the treatment of hysteria through hypnosis. He later trained under Jean Charcot in Paris before establishing a private practice focused on nervous disorders. Freud's groundbreaking theories, especially regarding the unconscious mind, found expression in his 1900 work, "The Interpretation of Dreams," and later in "The Ego and the Id," which introduced his structural model of the psyche. Despite facing significant opposition from the medical community, he gained a devoted following, leading to the formation of the International Psychoanalytic Association in 1910. After fleeing Nazi-occupied Vienna in 1938, Freud continued to influence disciplines beyond psychology, including history and the arts, until his death in 1939.
