3 quotes from In Memoriam

  • "I hold it true, whate'er befall; / I feel it, when I sorrow most; / 'Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all."
  • "Nature, red in tooth and claw / With ravine, shrieked against the sun; / Yet, as the heart and all the rest, / We hold our true belief from pain."
  • "Be near me when my light is low, / When the blood creeps, and the nerves prick / And death's dark whisper is so close / To the heart that beats so sick."

Author : Alfred Tennyson

Alfred Lord Tennyson, born in Somersby, Lincolnshire, was the fourth of twelve children to clergyman George Tennyson and his wife, Elizabeth. His education began at Louth Grammar School in 1816, but discontent led him to study at home until he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, at 18. There, alongside his brother Charles, he published his debut work, *Poems by Two Brothers*, in 1827. Tennyson's poetic career flourished following the death of his close friend Arthur Hallam in 1833, which profoundly influenced notable works such as *In Memoriam*, *Ulysses*, and *The Passing of Arthur*. In 1850, he succeeded William Wordsworth as Poet Laureate and married childhood companion Emily Sellwood, with whom he had two sons. Elevated to the peerage in 1884 as Baron Tennyson of Aldworth—making him the first Englishman honored solely for literary achievement—he continued to write prolifically, including plays, until his death in 1892 at the age of 83, when he was interred in Westminster Abbey.
