Emerging early as a civil rights activist, he masterminded the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–1956) and co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, becoming its first president. King's pivotal role in the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, solidified his status as one of history’s most compelling orators and significantly raised public awareness of civil rights issues. In 1964, he became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, recognized for his unwavering commitment to ending segregation and racial injustice through nonviolent resistance. Tragically assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, King was honored posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and a Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. In 1986, his legacy was further commemorated with the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday in the United States.
