Her academic journey began as a lecturer at the College of William & Mary and later at Liverpool University. From 1977, she taught at the University of York, eventually holding the positions of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Professor of English Literature. Between 1998 and 2008, she served as the Goldsmiths' Chair of English Literature and Fellow of New College at Oxford, and she was elected President of Wolfson College in 2008. Lee is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the British Academy, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda's and St Cross Colleges, Oxford. Recognized for her contributions to literature, she received Honorary Doctorates from both Liverpool and York Universities and was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 2003.
