Robert W. Chambers was a renowned American artist and writer, best known for his contributions to the literary genre of weird fiction. Educated at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and later the Art Students' League, he studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian from 1886 to 1893, showcasing his artwork at the Salon as early as 1889. Upon returning to New York, Chambers transitioned from visual art to writing, producing his first novel, *In the Quarter*, in 1887. His most acclaimed work, *The King in Yellow*, is a collection of interconnected short stories that explores the madness induced by a fictional play of the same name. Chambers continued to delve into the weird genre with collections like *The Maker of Moons* and *The Tree of Heaven*, but none achieved the same level of success. Over time, he shifted to romantic fiction, becoming one of the most successful authors of his era, with several bestsellers and numerous works serialized in magazines. After 1924, he focused solely on historical fiction. Chambers spent his summers in Broadalbin, New York, where his novels often reflected the colonial life of the region. He married Elsa Vaughn Moller in 1898 and had a son who also pursued writing. Chambers passed away in Broadalbin on December 16, 1933.
