James Dennis "Jim" Carroll was a multifaceted author, poet, autobiographer, and punk musician, celebrated for his compelling 1978 memoir, The Basketball Diaries. This influential work chronicles his adolescent experiences with basketball, addiction, and the gritty realities of life in New York City, and it was later adapted into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Carroll embraced sobriety in the 1970s after relocating to California, where he married Rosemary Klemfuss in 1978; although they eventually divorced, they maintained a lasting friendship. Carroll passed away from a heart attack at his Manhattan home on September 11, 2009, at the age of 60, having been in declining health due to pneumonia and hepatitis C. He was reportedly engaged in his writing at the time of his death, and his funeral was held at Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church in Greenwich Village.
