Walter Dean Myers, born on August 12, 1937, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, grew up in Harlem after moving there at the age of three with his foster parents. Educated in public schools, he attended Stuyvesant High School until joining the army at seventeen. Following four years of service, he worked various jobs while earning a BA from Empire State College, eventually dedicating himself to writing full-time in 1977. Myers achieved early success with his first children's book, "Where Does the Day Go?", published in 1969. Over his prolific career, he authored more than seventy books for children and young adults, earning numerous accolades, including five Coretta Scott King Awards, two Newbery Honors, the Margaret A. Edwards Award, and the first Michael Printz Award for "Monster." An influential speaker and educator, he engaged with young readers through school visits and workshops. Myers was married with three grown children and lived in Jersey City, New Jersey, until his passing on July 1, 2014, at the age of 76.
