James "Jim" Arthur Lovell, Jr. (born March 25, 1928) is a distinguished former NASA astronaut and retired United States Navy captain, best known for commanding the Apollo 13 mission, which miraculously returned to Earth despite a critical failure en route to the Moon. He was the command module pilot for Apollo 8, the inaugural mission to enter lunar orbit. A celebrated figure in space exploration, Lovell is a recipient of both the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He holds the distinction of being one of only 24 individuals to have traveled to the Moon, and is notably the first American to fly in space four times.
