Kiese Laymon is a prominent Black Southern writer hailing from Jackson, Mississippi. After studying at Millsaps College and Jackson State University, he earned his degree from Oberlin College and later received an MFA from Indiana University. Known for his impactful works, Laymon is the author of the novel "Long Division," released in June 2013, and the essay collection "How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America," published in August 2013. As a contributing editor at Gawker, he has written for various esteemed publications, including Esquire and NPR. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing, as well as co-director of Africana Studies at Vassar College.
