After earning his M.A. from Syracuse University in 1988, he joined the faculty of the Syracuse University Creative Writing Program in 1997. Over the years, he has held visiting positions at numerous prestigious institutions and contributed to various writing workshops. A versatile talent, Saunders has experienced a wide array of occupations, including working as a doorman and a guitarist, which have enriched his literary voice. He is married, has two children, and passionately supports educational initiatives for Tibetan refugee children in Nepal.
