Alexander "Sasha" Theodore Shulgin (born June 17, 1925) was a distinguished American pharmacologist, chemist, and drug developer renowned for his contributions to the field of psychoactive substances. He played a pivotal role in the popularization of MDMA, or ecstasy, in the late 1970s and 1980s, advocating its use in psychopharmacology, particularly for treating depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Over the years, Shulgin discovered, synthesized, and bioassayed more than 230 psychoactive compounds, including notable phenethylamines from the 2C* family, such as 2C-B, 2C-I, and 2C-E. Alongside his wife Ann, he authored the influential works PiHKAL and TiHKAL in 1991 and 1997, detailing the effects and synthesis of psychoactive drugs. Shulgin’s extensive research also encompassed the synthesis of compounds based on tryptamine, solidifying his legacy in the study of psychedelics.
