He is best known for his New York Times bestseller, "Three Cups of Tea," which has sold over 3 million copies and has been published in 39 countries. His dedication to promoting education in Pakistan and Afghanistan has led him to establish over 131 schools, providing more than 58,000 children with the opportunity to learn, including 44,000 girls. Mortenson's efforts have garnered international recognition, including Pakistan's highest civil award, Sitara-e-Pakistan, and nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. Born in 1957 and raised near Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, he served in the U.S. Army before embarking on a mission to build schools after a life-changing experience in a remote Pakistani village.
