His harrowing journey began at the age of five when he fled his village of Juol alongside his brother and cousin after an attack by Sudanese National Islamic militants. The trio embarked on a perilous thousand-mile trek across Sudan to Ethiopia, enduring life-threatening challenges such as hunger, disease, and violence. Despite the hardships of refugee camps, where he learned the English alphabet by writing in sand, Benson continued to pursue education even amid adversity, grappling with health issues that hindered his schooling. After arriving in the United States in 2001 and working at a grocery store, he ultimately found his footing in digital photography at Waste Management Corporation in California.
