The younger son of distinguished lawyer David Warner Peck and Elizabeth Saville, he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and earned his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Peck served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1972 as Assistant Chief Psychiatry and Neurology Consultant to the Surgeon General, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He entered private practice in Connecticut before gaining international acclaim with his groundbreaking book, *The Road Less Traveled*, published in 1978, which has sold over six million copies and been translated into numerous languages. Throughout his career, Dr. Peck authored several influential works on psychology, spirituality, and community, establishing himself as a respected authority on the interplay between faith and reason.
