3 quotes from The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

  • "I dream of painting and then I paint my dream."
  • "The only way to escape is to embrace the present moment."
  • "I am not a man who dwells on the past, but rather one who hopes for the future."

Author : Jean-Dominique Bauby

Jean-Dominique Bauby was a prominent French journalist and the editor of the esteemed fashion magazine ELLE. At the age of 43, his life was irrevocably changed when he suffered a massive stroke on December 8, 1995, leading to Locked-in Syndrome, a condition that left him completely paralyzed except for the ability to blink his left eyelid. Despite this profound challenge, Bauby demonstrated remarkable resilience by writing the acclaimed memoir *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly*. Using a painstaking method of blinking to select letters recited to him, he composed the entire book in his mind before conveying it one letter at a time. Published in France in 1997, the book captured the beauty of his thoughts and experiences. Tragically, Bauby passed away just ten days after its release, succumbing to pneumonia, and he is interred in a family grave at the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
