Author : Sanyika Shakur

Sanyika Shakur, originally known as Kody Scott and famously nicknamed "Monster," was a former member of the Eight-Tray Gangster Crips in Los Angeles. At just 13 years old, he earned his moniker after committing a brutal act of violence. However, during his time in prison, Shakur claimed to have undergone a profound transformation, aligning himself with the Republic of New Afrika movement and penning the critically acclaimed autobiography "Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member," published in 1993. His extensive prison experience included 36 months at San Quentin and five years at Pelican Bay, much of it spent in solitary confinement, where he embraced Islam. Despite his attempts at reform, Shakur faced legal troubles throughout his life, including a 2008 conviction for carjacking and robbery. His fiction debut came later that year with "T.H.U.G. L.I.F.E." In July 2017, he returned to prison for assault, and he ultimately passed away on June 6, 2021, in a homeless encampment in Oceanside, California.
