Author : Robert Leckie

Robert Leckie, born on December 18, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Rutherford, New Jersey, was a distinguished American author and veteran. Beginning his writing career as a sports journalist for The Bergen Evening Record in high school, Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, serving bravely in the Pacific theater during World War II as a scout and machine gunner. He experienced fierce combat in iconic battles including Guadalcanal and Peleliu, before returning home in 1945. After the war, Leckie pursued journalism, working for several prominent newspapers and the Associated Press. Inspired by his experiences and disillusioned by the romantic portrayal of war in the Broadway musical "South Pacific," he penned his acclaimed memoir, "Helmet for My Pillow," published in 1957. Leckie went on to write over 40 books covering American military history, leaving a lasting legacy until his death on December 24, 2001.
