Author : Paul Brickhill

Paul Brickhill (1916-1991) was an Australian author and World War II veteran, best known for his gripping account of a daring escape from a German POW camp in his novel, The Great Escape. A native of Melbourne, Brickhill served as a Royal Australian Air Force pilot and was shot down while on mission in Tunisia in 1943. Imprisoned in Luft Stalag III in Silesia, he and his fellow inmates devised an elaborate escape plan, which resulted in a mass breakout, although only a few managed to evade recapture. Brickhill's experiences as a reporter for the Sydney Sun before the war influenced his storytelling, prompting him to document the harrowing tales of his fellow prisoners. After the war, he transitioned from journalism to authorship, releasing his first book, Escape to Danger, in 1946, followed by The Great Escape in 1950 and The Dam Busters in 1951, solidifying his reputation as a prominent chronicler of wartime heroism.
